A Growing Trend for Garden Novices

As more consumers try their hand at growing their own herbs, microgreens, flowers and vegetables, gardening necessities are creeping into the gift world.

As consumers continue to find new hobbies that aid in both mental and physical health, gardening is on the rise. According to the NPD Group, more than a quarter of consumers say they are spending more time doing gardening/yardwork because of the pandemic. More than 80 percent of consumers are caring for their lawn/landscaping on their own, and 74 percent do at least some type of gardening. Though garden sales were down 4 percent in the first half of 2021 compared to 2020, they were still up 13 percent versus the first half of 2019.

Even people with a formerly black thumb are now trying to grow their own herbs or vegetables. Kitchen gardens are especially popular with this novice group since the start up is simpler and care for the plants is easier. After covering the winter shows, it was obvious that gifts that make gardening more fun and accessible to both adults and children are having a moment. Here are a few examples found at the January Atlanta Market, and keep an eye out for more giftable gardening gifts from other wholesalers. We have a feeling this trend will continue to grow.
